Susan E. West holds two degrees, a Master of Arts from the University of Arkansas
and a Bachelor of Science from Stephen F Austin State University. After leaving the
private sector of Hotel Management, she began teaching in 2006. She is currently
an Associate Professor of Agriculture and Tourism at ֱ.
She teaches several tourism courses. She has been a state judge for ProStart since
2005 and was former Director of Culinary and Hospitality at NorthWest Arkansas Community
College. She has been a judge for Iron Chef, Arkansas Hospitality Association and
Iron Skillet Competition with the Arkansas Parks and Tourism Department. She is a
Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) through American Hotel and Lodging Association.
She is also a Travel Marketing Professional (TMP) from Southeast Tourism Society and
also serves on their Board of Directors. She recently served as the chair for the
Eclipse Committee for the campus where she worked with a team that aided in bringing
thousands of dollars for ten Registered Student Organizations.
She is ServSafe food and alcohol certified from the National Restaurant Association
and teaches sanitation courses throughout the state. She has been a guest lecturer
with Arkansas Hospitality Association and Bed and Breakfast Association of Arkansas,
and has guest spoken to tourism organizations about AI. She has worked with publishers
to create content in several textbooks and has published. In total, she has been
awarded over $134,000 in grant money, including a Teaching Innovation and Technology
grant that focused on utilizing virtual reality as an aid in training empathy to tourism
students. Susan is a member of SKAL, an international tourism organization and has
served in all leadership roles including voting delegate for Arkansas. She served
as faculty advisor of Hospitality Society for twelve years. She was the faculty advisor
of the Resorts and Recreation Learning Living Community. She also serves on the Board
of Directors for Southeast Tourism Society, as well as Main Street Russellville. Susan
resides in Russellville with her husband Howard of 34 years. Together they have a
29 year-old daughter, a 33-year-old son, and two delightful grandsons.
